30 years ago this month I saw my favorite movie of all time: Star Wars The Empire Strikes Back. My favorite character of the Star Wars saga, Yoda, had his debut in this film and he had some great lines. When Luke was trying to use the Force to lift his starfighter out of a swamp he said to Yoda, “I can’t. It’s too big.”
“Size matters not.” Yoda responded. “No different. Only different in your mind.”
The message that Yoda shared with Luke on the swampy planet of Degobah is the same message I want to share with those of you who lead small groups: “Size matters not”. Although my reasons for sharing this message are a bit different.
Luke’s problem was that he thought something was too big. The problem many small group leaders have is they think their group is too small. They think things like:
- “I don’t need to prepare for a group of just 8 people.”
- “I’m not making much of a difference because I’m just a small group leader.”
- “Leadership books don’t apply to me because they’re all written for people who are leading hundreds or thousands.”
My response to all of these is the same: “Size matters not.”
Stop berating yourself because the group you lead is small. Jesus was the best leader of all time and his group was only 12! By leading a small group of people you’ve chosen something HUGELY important. Don’t think for a minute that it’s any easier to lead a small group of 10 than it is to lead a corporation of hundreds. Leadership principles are always the same! The only thing that changes is scale.
Download my e-Book, Triple-Threat Leadership, and read it through the eyes of a small group leader. I’m willing to bet that you’ll walk away with some pretty powerful insights. Apply what you learn and you’ll become a fantastic Triple-Threat Small Group Leader!
As of the time this blog is being written the e-Book is free so download it now by clicking here!
Hi Alan,
As a small group (LifeGroup) leader for LifeChurch.tv in Yukon, OK, I appreciate you offering this to those of us in these types of leadership positions. I hope to glean some wisdom to employ with my group.
