nobelA friend of mine named Joe mentioned that this topic would make a good blog post. I considered what would be the best way to treat this potentially controversial subject and opted to write a simple list of points with some concluding thoughts.

6 Reasons Jesus Would Not Win The Nobel Peace Prize

  • He’s not politically correct enough.
  • He doesn’t care about opinion polls.
  • He’s not afraid to tick off opinion makers (the religious elite back then, the media today).
  • He said, “Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword” (Matt 10:34 NIV).
  • He came to provide eternal peace, not earthly peace.

At the end of the day, my own peace does not come from the fact that I don’t have a gun in my house. My peace does not come from the fact that I am not in the military. It has nothing to do with politics, money, strength, or power. It has to do with the condition of my heart.

Jesus said, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6 NIV). I have peace because I know my Heavenly Father through Christ Jesus. Jesus also said, “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world” (John 16:33 NIV). I know life’s troubles will come, but I also know that I will not face them alone. Best of all, I know that I have eternal life in Heaven and will live with my Heavenly Father forever.

Jesus said…”I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?”
~John 11:25-26 (NIV)

Great post and so true. Jesus gives ultimate and abundant peace regardless of the circumstances. How about a Top 10 Reasons why “6 Reasons Jesus Wouldn’t Win The Nobel Peace Prize” won’t make Letterman?

  3. I think you nailed it, Alan! Glad to be listed among your friends!

  4. Thanks Everyone! Special Thanks to you, Joe, for giving me the topic idea.

Great post, but i think your third point, while close, might be off a few degrees. You correctly depict the religious elite of Jesus’ time – but I’d argue that the religious elite today would be ticked off by Jesus (maybe instead of tax collectors, samaritans & lepers he’d be hanging out with hugh hefner, muslims and turning water into wine at gay weddings?) and would likely execute Jesus again. Jesus didn’t fit the description of Messiah they were looking/hoping for then- so what makes us think he’d fit the description we’ve built up in our minds, books & movies this time around? I realize that treds on scary ground for most of us, but do you truly believe the Jews had any intention of crucifying the true messiah (despite it being prophesied)? Therefore by the grace of God go i… it just seems that it wasn’t the secular roman gov’t/media who jesus was railing against…
thanks for sharing & putting the idea out there!

  6. Thanks for the comment Jeff. I think you’re right, he definitely would tick off the religious elite today. Many churches I’ve been in wouldn’t stand for ministry the way Jesus did it. I stand by the belief that he’d also tick off the media though. The media is the voice of one of today’s largest religions: the religion of secularism and self.
